Stop Ecocide International

Stop Ecocide International Ltd (SEI), a UK non-profit company with no shares and limited by guarantee, is the driving force behind, and central hub of, the growing global movement to criminalise ecocide.

Originally named Ecological Defence Integrity Ltd it was incorporated in the UK (registered company no. 10830859) in 2017 by pioneering barrister Polly Higgins (1968-2019) and current Executive Director Jojo Mehta. Re-named Stop Ecocide International in 2021 to match the branding of the growing global movement.

Our charitable entity, the Stop Ecocide Foundation (with ANBI status), was created in November 2019 in the Netherlands to support the growing movement and is the main fundraising and commissioning vehicle for our work.  SEI and SEF operate as a close partnership whereby activities furthering the shared objectives of the two entities can be developed in tandem.  In summary, SEI is responsible for overall strategy, policy, direction and communications while SEF receives and distributes funds and is the commissioning body for relevant projects (eg the Independent Expert Panel for the Legal Definition of Ecocide).
